Since the 1970s, the number of craft breweries operating in the U.S. has skyrocketed from less than 100 to more than 2,500. That’s promising news for the industry as a whole, but if you’re a new upstart fighting for recognition—or an older outfit trying to stay relevant—it spells fierce competition.

Picture your new potential fan standing in the craft beer aisle, overwhelmed by the vast selection. If there are 99 different types of beer on the wall and the person spends two minutes looking around, this works out to 1.2 seconds looking at each beer (assuming they actually look around). Realistically, only a few beers will catch a shopper's eye. For someone unfamiliar with your brand, your label is the only thing driving their decision.
